Did anyone notice how in 2 Kings 18:4 the bronze snake that Moses made back in Numbers 21:9 shows up again? The Israelites had made an idol out of it -- burning incense to it. And King Hezekiah destroyed it. It continues to amaze me the amount of idols the Israelites would bow down to.
But then a part of me is envious of how easily identifiable so many of their idols were. Their idols were statues and poles and altars -- things people physically bowed down to. Here in America, so many of our idols are not so concrete and involve more of a mental bowing down than a physical bowing down. And their idols had names like Baal and Molech and Asherah and Dagon, easily identified and set up as a god to worship. Oh, our idols have names as well if we look closely enough -- names like anger, greed, pride, hate, jealousy, etc.
